May 12th, 2023 Legislative Update

Updated: Aug 24, 2023

This Thursday was Statehood Day, celebrating when Minnesota became a state on May 11, 1858. I was able to see the electrolier (chandelier) lit in the Capitol Rotunda, which only happens ever year on May 11th.

This weekend is the fishing opener, and I wish you all good luck as you head out on the water! The photo at right is me on a walleye fishing trip last year. This Sunday, we celebrate all the mothers in our district - Happy Mother's Day to you!

End of Session Approaches

Now that we're nearing the constitutional adjournment date for this year's session, we have started seeing conference committee reports coming back to the House floor. Some of the bills, like the Veterans bill, I was proud to vote for. Others, however, will make life much more expensive for Carver County families.

The Housing bill, which passed along party lines, raises the Metro area sales tax by a quarter of a percent to subsidize renting apartments rather than making it easier for Minnesotans to buy homes. The Higher Education bill uses tax dollars to provide free college to some students at the expense of scholarships for underrepresented teacher candidates and degrees in high-need industries. The Public Safety bill, which will be coming before the House soon, includes several gun control bills that infringe on Minnesotans' Second Amendment Rights. There are plenty more bills still to come, and I will continue fighting for the best outcome for Carver County residents.

Capitol Visitors

I got the opportunity to welcome a group from Waconia Middle School to the Capitol this week. Thank you all for visiting!
